About me

"You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream." C.S. Lewis

Meet David Watkins, a.k.a. Muddwolf, an independent artist from the Bay Area, East San Jose. Born on January 4th, 1970, in Carmel, California, he was raised in the heart of the Bay, where his love for rap music took root in the early '80s. Music became his escape, his passion fueled by Right On! magazine posters, Yo! MTV Raps!, and local favorite Home Turf. Performing in high school and writing raps for his college friends, Dave found his rhythm, recording songs with nothing but a record player and cassette recorder.

Back in the day, as Davey Jam, he passed out tapes to rap groups but forgot one crucial detail—his contact info. Had he included it, he believes he could have stood alongside the Beastie Boys, Third Bass, and even Vanilla Ice. But fate had other plans. A nerve-wracking audition for a record label led him to step away from his dream.

Years later, thanks to his best friend Steve, Dave returned to music. Needing a new moniker, he fused his love for mud races with his artistry, becoming Mudwolf. But a copyright snag led him to tweak the name, adding a second “D” to create Muddwolf.

From working with beatmakers on YouTube to collaborating with Workhouse Studios and Reed’s Recordings, Dave reclaimed his dream. Through CDBaby, his music reached a global audience. Over time, he brought in singers, even featuring his wife on “No Retreat, No Surrender.”

Now, in 2025, Muddwolf continues to build his legacy—reaching more fans, selling merch, and even aspiring to write a book. Balancing his job as a grocery store cashier, his music passion, and family time with his wife and teenage daughter, Dave proves that the dream never dies—it just waits for the right moment to rise again.

The Teenage Dream

Early 80's

Here's me when I was in my early teenage years. I went by Davey Jam and even had a hat (THAT FIT) monogrammed with D.J. on it.  Very few hats fit my head.  I wasn't a fan of sports but after seeing pictures of N.W.A. wearing Raiders hats I thought I'd do the same after all they were a bay area team. I miss that trifold Adidas jacket! Behind the jacket is me performing a rap or two at a friends wedding. I was the only white kid.  Above that picture to the left is the dj and to the right are his family members. The red sign is a church invitation in which I went to and rapped at. Other pics include an eagle and a sports poster. Then there's a few binders. The top one I had consisted of a lot of rhymes I had written.

Davey Jam on the Box

My first rap. It was longer than this but here's a brief sample:

My name is Dave just call me Romeo.

Cuz I'm hot to trot and just good to go.

Baddest of the bad. Coolest of the cool.

I make the guys scream and shout and the ladies all drool.

For me and you see no one else can be.

High on the top and that's T.O.P.

of the chart and don't start when I start to rhyme.

Cuz this is my moment and this is my time.

e.t.c. e.t.c. I'd go on for a long time with this rap. But sadly I got nervous when I actually walked into a REAL studio around 1987 and just couldn't do it. So I gave up for a LONG time until a friend talked me into trying again many years later.

I even made demo tapes using REAL CASSETTES! Remember those? You'd take a pen or pencil to rewind them. Ugh. Sadly I didn't put my contact info on them when I handed them out to a few new rappers coming up. One of them was POD, a famous Christian rap group at the time I believe.

Mudwolf Is Born

From Mud Races To Rapping

Years ago I signed up and did my very first mud race called The Muddy Patriot. I wanted this to be not just fun but rememberable. So I created “The Mudtimate Warrior,” a spinoff of one of my favorite wrestler from the (at that time) WWF (World Wrestling Federation). Than later I wanted another to do another character. Enter “Mudwolf.” I’d paint my face and create a shirt mostly to get dirty and read “Mudwolf” on it. The shirt, face paint, and attitude was liked by a lot of people. Then sometime later an A&R rep from Artandent talked to me about names.
“Mudwolf” was taken as in “Mudwolf Tires.” So therefore I had to come up with a different name or add another vowel or letter. An extra D sounded better plus rolls off the tongue easy.
“M-U-double-d-w-o-l-f.”
When it came to having a logo. Easy, a wolf paw.
